What is Raw Shakti?
Raw
refers to pure or unaltered and Shakti is the Sanskrit word for
life-force, power or energy. Sanskrit is an ancient language which many
of the yoga texts were originally written in. We translate this into
English as Raw or Pure Energy. We all have an abundance of pure energy
inside of us. Raw Shakti yoga works through the modality of yoga to
connect us with our inner purity and energy by taking off the layers
that often cover our essence. By revealing our pure energetic nature to
us we will realize our creative potential. The purifying practices of
yoga help to purify the body and mind by getting rid of the junk or
impurity. We are left with the energy and purity to live our life with.
To have energy is to have radiance and vitality. To live from this
place of Raw Shakti is to live from a place where we have an abundance
of energy to help ourselves live healthy and therefore to help the
world in whatever ways we are called to do so. Anything that manifests
does so through Shakti. What we create is from our own pure or Raw
Shakti.

On the Path
Namaskaram.
I hope you are having a great day. This year I have been pondering the law of
attraction. The book The Secret describes this law and shows the power of
Positive Thinking. Positive Thinking is also one of the 5 points of yoga, according
to the Sivananda tradition. Basically, the law of attraction is about the fact
that you will draw more of what you think about into your life. If we think
happy thoughts then we will become happier. This is a solid reason to keep our
thoughts positive even in the midst of life's challenges! It seems vital to
practice happiness even if we are not feeling it. "If you can't make it,
fake it" "train the brain" "remove the samskara (ruts of negative
thinking patterns)" are all sayings you will here in yoga that point us to
thinking positive thoughts about who we are and the dreams we crave to pursue.
One way or another we will achieve our goals.
It is said in The Secret that no
one who ever had a dream actually knew how they were going to achieve it! They
just knew they were going to! This is a relief to me. In other words we must have strong faith
in our self, and in the dreams we have, to be able to take them forward one
small step at a time. Anyone who has accomplished
anything, did it one step at a time. It is the same for our yoga practice. Every
day we can take that step by getting on the mat. Through taking these small steps we
dedicate ourselves to growth and we achieve happiness along the path. Even
amidst our busy (or not busy) lives, let us make that choice to get on the yoga
mat. To show up is the hardest part of the journey. How many of us have yet to show
up to pursue what we dream about? Whether it is an ideal relationship, a
truly healthy body, a peaceful mind, a dream job, or a vision of how life could
be, it can happen if we think positively. Einstein said, "Our thoughts are a
preview of coming attractions." He is saying that our thoughts become our life.
Maybe take today to observe your thoughts and transition any negative thinking
into positive thinking. It can be tough, especially at first! It becomes
easier with practice. Even though it takes effort to create the life we dream of, it is
so worth it in that living our dreams, even just starting that process, brings
us joy!
For dreams, no matter how big or small, being pursued,

A Journey
Taialofa
arrived at my house in Samoa ready to teach Yoga to a group of
interested ladies, a little over a year ago. For most of us it was our
first Yoga experience. I can clearly recall how that first class left
me feeling exhilarated and amazed. I was astounded that 'exercise'
could be both extremely physical and yet very gentle. I was hooked.
Twice
weekly Taialofa would arrive at my home and lead our group through a
physical journey. In the early stages there was plenty of laugher as
bodies creaked and groaned as movements were awakened that had been
lost plenty of years before. Ever so gently Taialofa moved us through
new challenges as very quickly as we began to achieve a variety of Yoga
poses. I enjoyed every class and was motivated to achieve more as I
could feel the changes within myself. (more ...) | |

The Next Step
OK, you've been practicing
yoga for a while, you have gotten pretty comfortable with the asanas you have
been practicing for some time, you have attended some yoga events, and you are
feeling pretty self satisfied with your progress. You are feeling pretty
healthy and pleased at departing from the old, creaky overweight you that began
your yoga practice three years ago. Wallowing in all that self satisfaction, it
gets easier and easier to skip a morning or weekly yoga practice, let the diet slide,
but keeps the memory of all your yoga successes that are slowly slip-sliding away.
What to do? It's time for:
YOGA BOOT CAMP! I left for Samoa
for a 28 day intensive yoga experience with Kevin
and Taialofa.
Arriving in Samoa after three flights and 16 hours in the air, I was
greeted with open arms and their beautiful, new-arrival ritual. What a pleasure
to be back with Kevin and Taialofa
again! They had only moved into their new quarters
a few days before. In spite of the intense timetable, their new home was
welcoming, neat, and looked like they had been there forever. Their new landlord is a gardener
and the month was highlighted with many delicious delicacies form their copious
garden.
Almost immediately, we went
out to see the future sight of the Raw
Shakti Yoga
Spa. This consisted of
a seven acre cube of jungle about 1700 feet up the side of a mountain overlooking
the Pacific! What a beautiful sight!
The
month I spent with Kevin and Taialofa was custom planned for my
interests and needs. There were days spent touring beautiful sites
around the
island of Upolu, days helping to clear jungle boundaries of their
planned yoga
center as well as clear a place to build their first building on the
property, several
beautiful rituals, days at the ocean, cooking lessons, fabulous meals,
massages, evening meditation, daily study of the yoga sutras, lots of
walking, shopping trips to
town, oh, and did I mention? Lots of yoga! Stay tuned for the details
of all of
these adventures! There is far too much to tell in just one article!

What's New
Art Miles Mural Project Samoa Kevin organized the Art Mural Miles Project
with the art teachers and students at Laumua o Punaoa School in Samoa.
There was a beautiful ceremony marking the beginning of the first mural
that will be painted by the students and Samoan children. Darwin
Selesele (pictured to the left) composed a song about Peace and this
was sung by the students. We were
excited that the vision for Peace and our volunteering for this art
project brought these people together. Kevin gave a speech in Samoan
and English about how the murals is a step toward world peace. He spoke
about how the children will be the ones to bring peace to the planet.
There will be 10 murals donated to Samoa and we are donating our time
(part of our vision is to always give back to the countries we visit
through volunteering our time to projects that build community) to
facilitate them and they will join with the other murals being painted
from all over the world. There are murals being done in 130 countries!
For this project they will be bound together and wrapped around the
great pyramid of Egypt in the year 2010. They represent world peace
through the art of children from around the world. The theme for
the Samoa mural was peace through sports. We hope to unveil the murals
created in Samoa at the South Pacific Games in August.

Marichasana III
Here at Tafatafa beach in Samoa, Kevin is enjoying sun and sand in this asana.
To
enter this pose start in dandasana, seated posture with your legs
straight in front of you with your toes pointing toward the ceiling and
creating a 90 degree angle between your legs and your torso.
Maintaining this integrity, bend one knee up and place your foot on the
floor close to your knee that is long. Hug this knee into the chest and
try to straighten up the spine. Now reach the oppsosite arm across the
body and your your elbow as a lever on your bent knee. This motion will
intiate the twist in the torso. You may stay want to stay here with
your other arm balancing you. If you can keep your back straight
continue the twist and try to reach your arm around your knee and the
other behind your back and connect your hands! This is a spine twisting
shoulder opener! Not as easy as it looks perhaps but it comes with
practice. Then reverse the motions for balance on the other side. Enjoy where you are at in this regal Marichasana.

Eggplant Sautee
Serves 4, Vegan
Ingredients:
- 6 small eggplants
- 1/2 cup of coconut cream
- 3 limes
- 4 tablespoons of Coconut oil
- 1 large red onion
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 2 tablespoons of cumin
- 2 cups baby spinach
- 2 red peppers (capsium)
- 1 tablespoon sea salt
Directions:
Start by slicing the eggplant
lengthwise, as thin as you can, and then soak them in salted water for 30 minutes.(use
a tablespoon of sea salt in the water and help it to dissolve by stirring it
around) After 30 minutes of soaking the eggplants, drain the water and you will
see the dark color that is removed. This helps to keep the eggplant tasting
sweet rather than sour. On low temperature place the coconut oil in frying pan.
Add garlic and onion, chopped into small pieces. Cook for 3 minutes stirring
the onions and garlic around. Add eggplant and stir often. Then add coconut cream and cumin. After a few minutes
add the red pepper (sliced into long strips) and baby spinach. Stir for a
minute or so. Squeeze limes (remove seeds
first) over the mixture and then sautee all together for about 5 minutes. Place
this Eggplant Sauté over wild rice or any type of grain that you enjoy. Cook 3
cups of grain and this meal will feed 4 people.
Note: Coconut oil has
Lauric Acid in it which is the same as in mother's milk. In the book called
Coconut Oil Miracle by Bruce Fife, there are many benefits described as to why
this oil is supremely healthy for you.

Nikki Schroder
Nikki
lives in Australia with her husband, who is
an officer in the Australian Navy, and their 2 children. During the
last 10 years
they have lived in Melbourne, Sydney, Darwin, Samoa, and Canberra. She
has a degree in Nuclear Medicine along with an MBA. She is a speaker
at Australian professional conferences and guest speaker at
international
conferences. She is Editor-in-Chief for the development of a text book
for the Bone
Mineral Density profession and she has conducted research in this
field. She often
takes her yoga out into her garden as she has a passion for native Australian
flora. The picture above is of a flower called Pig Face. This picture was taken by Nikki near her home. While
living in Samoa, yoga was a part of her life as
she held classes in her home. This is when she started to learn more
about yoga. Her cheerfully intellectual personality woke up to enjoying the
benefits of yoga in nature while on a retreat to Namua
Island in Samoa
with Josephine. When she was not on the yoga mat, you would find her enjoying
the underwater world with her mask and snorkel on. Her life is evolving in
integrative ways, as she incorporates yoga practice, gardening, raising her
kids and her professional work. Look for and perhaps even meet Nikki soon, as she will be
the in country guide for the first Raw Shakti Yoga tour of Australia,
happening in 2009!
Pete
Ketcham
Pete
continues to have yearly retreats with Raw Shakti. This year it was to
celebrate his 60th birthday so he treated himself to a 28 day yoga boot
camp to get himself healthy for the new decade ahead. His
evolution on the yoga mat is inspiring to many in that he has come so
far! On
his most recent journey a few people commented on how happy he looked.
Music to
his ears he would say. He lives in Keene, NH and enjoys walking,
biking,
nature, scuba diving, barbershop singing and time with friends. He is
the
President of the Barbershop group in Keene.
Membership has increased thanks to his positive outlook and ability to
compliment people's strengths as they learn to sing. His own voice is
growing
as well, as he learns to Om in order to connect with his center.
